A course in Rhetoric and Oratory Basics

Who the course is designed for:

  • Who wants to master the art of public speaking,
  • Who wants to master video communication on the Internet,

The classes on the basics of rhetoric and oratory give vital knowledge for mastering the art of eloquence. Training is directly connected with development of practical skills and abilities for successful speech activity – both in Russian and Ukrainian – in any sphere of communication; we also provide possibility for simultaneous bilingual practice (if you wish). In the classroom you will produce correct pronunciation of letters and phrases, to work on formulation and development of voice, breathing, learn to “feel” the words, their sound according to their meaning, the generated associations, intonation of phrases, the correct build public speaking. Classes give knowledge about the culture of speech, help to increase its level; are introduced to rhetorical techniques and figures, also devoted to the formation of behavior during speeches and communication.

Course structure:

The first part is devoted to:

  • The formation and “polishing” of the correct pronunciation of sounds and words (the teacher in this part of the course works as a speech therapist, gives recommendations for the correction of speech defects), speech technique, setting the tempo;
  • exercises for the development of breathing and the physical culture of the speaker;
  • development of the voice, its sonority, the necessary tonal coloring;
  • the development of the ability to feel and “convey” the meaning of the word;
  • the intonation of different phrases;
  • development of correct mimicry, gestures, posture, and the ability to convey the emotions expressed.

The second part involves:

  • exercises on overcoming fear of the audience and developing confidence;
  • preparation for public speaking in the classroom, mastering the composition requirements in order to arouse the listener’s interest and maintain it;
  • speaking on various topics, developing the skills and abilities to communicate with the audience;
  • learning to practise dialogue, developing the ability to ask questions and make arguments;
  • tips for successful communication in all circumstances.

In the third part of the course:

  • Develop correct and beautiful Ukrainian pronunciation (on a well-chosen language material);
  • Expand the vocabulary of the Ukrainian language;
  • learn about the qualitative indicators of high speech culture and the causes of various types of speech errors;
  • Acquire practical skills of correcting stylistic mistakes;
  • Acquire practical skills of correcting stylistic mistakes; master rhetorical devices and figures;
  • practice speaking in the Ukrainian language.
